Proper storage of your cold-weather gear protects technical performance and prevents damage during off-season downtime. Begin by thoroughly cleaning each item: wash jackets, base layers, and gloves using mild detergent and lukewarm water. Ensure they're completely dry—moisture trapped inside technical fabrics can foster mold growth and degrade membrane layers (e.g., Gore-Tex).
Use breathable storage solutions, like cotton sacks or mesh bags; avoid plastic vacuum bags unless specifically designed for technical gear—these can trap condensation. Store in a cool (10–20 °C), low-humidity space, away from direct sunlight and heat sources, which can break down elastic fibers and coatings over time.
Hang insulated outer layers by the shoulders to maintain loft and prevent permanent compression. Fold less fragile pieces loosely—tight folds can cause creases and damage insulation. Periodically check stored items for signs of mildew, rodent damage, or gloss loss. At the end of winter, reapply DWR treatment if water beading has diminished.
This periodic maintenance ensures gear remains as functional and resilient as when first used—even after months of inactivity.
